Speed over the ground going downstream
Going with the current, the river carries the boat along, so its speed over the ground is its own speed plus the current.
Downstream the boat really covers 32 km every hour.
6.RP.A.3Identify SubproblemsTime for the downstream trip
Time is distance divided by speed: hours = km ÷ (km per hour).
Going downstream takes 25/8 hours, a little over 3 hours.
6.RP.A.3Analyze The UnitsTime left for the upstream trip
Subtract the downstream time from the 5-hour limit.
The upstream trip may take at most 15/8 hours.
7.EE.B.4Identify SubproblemsWrite the inequality
Let the boat's own speed upstream be x km/h. Against the current it covers x - 2 km/h, and must fit in the time left.
A faster boat makes the left side smaller, so the inequality sets a lower limit on x.
7.EE.B.4Convert To AlgebraGoing upstream with its own speed , the boat covers the km in hours, and that must fit in the hours left.
Why?
Each hour the boat moves km through the water while the water carries it km back, so its progress along the bank is the difference, km per hour.
Why?
At a steady speed the time is the distance divided by the speed, so km at km per hour takes hours.
Why?
The round trip is the downstream time plus the upstream time, so the upstream leg gets whatever is left of the hours: .
Clear the fractions
The boat must make progress, so x - 2 > 0. Multiplying by the positive 8(x - 2) keeps the inequality's direction.
Multiplying by a positive quantity never flips an inequality.
7.EE.B.4Convert To AlgebraRound up and check
The speed is a whole number at least 55 1/3, so the smallest choice is 56. Check it and the number just below.
At 56 km/h the trip fits within 5 hours; at 55 km/h it does not.
7.EE.B.4Guess And CheckWhen a trip has a known half, spend its time first -- the leftover time turns into a clean inequality for the unknown half.
- Speed over the ground going downstream
- Time for the downstream trip
- Time left for the upstream trip
- Write the inequality
- Clear the fractions
- Round up and check
