Turn decimal-digit clues into inequalities

A natural number nn is less than 7575. When n75\frac{n}{75} is written as a decimal, its tenths digit is 11 and its thousandths digit is 33. When n+175\frac{n+1}{75} is written as a decimal, its hundredths digit is 88. Find nn.

How to solve
Strategy Convert to Algebra — A digit is a range in disguise: "tenths digit 1" means 0.1 ≤ n/75 < 0.2. Turn the two strongest clues into inequalities, multiply by 75, and the integer n is forced; then check the last clue.
1STEP 1

Use the tenths digit of n/75

Since n < 75, n/75 < 1, so a tenths digit of 1 means 0.1 ≤ n/75 < 0.2. Multiply by 75.

0.1 × 75 ≤ n < 0.2 × 75 → 7.5 ≤ n < 15
2STEP 2

Find the tenths digit of (n+1)/75

(n+1)/75 is between 0.12 and 0.2. At 0.2 the hundredths digit would be 0, so it is below 0.2 and its tenths digit is 1.

9/75=0.12 ≤ (n+1)/75 ≤ 15/75=0.2
3STEP 3

Use the hundredths digit of (n+1)/75

Tenths digit 1 and hundredths digit 8 mean 0.18 ≤ (n+1)/75 < 0.19. Multiply by 75.

0.18 × 75 ≤ n+1 < 0.19 × 75 → 13.5 ≤ n+1 < 14.25 → n+1=14
4STEP 4

Check the thousandths digit

Divide to confirm the clue we have not used yet.

13/75=0.17333…
Answer
13
13/75=0.1733… (tenths 1, thousandths 3) and 14/75=0.1866… (hundredths 8). All three clues hold.
Takeaway

A single digit of a decimal is really a range of values -- and ranges are what inequalities are for.

  • Use the tenths digit of n/75
  • Find the tenths digit of (n+1)/75
  • Use the hundredths digit of (n+1)/75
  • Check the thousandths digit
