Problem

Opposite faces of a prism are parallel

Three identical dice are stacked straight up to form a tall rectangular prism. On every die, opposite faces sum to 7. Wherever two stacked dice touch, the two touching faces sum to 8. The very top face shows 2 pips. I need the number of pips on the very bottom face that rests on the ground.

How to solve
Strategy Create a Physical Representation — Picture the three dice as a real tower and track only the top and bottom face of each cube from the top down. Two rules alternate: the opposite-face rule (sum 7) flips a face value to its partner inside one die, and the touching rule (sum 8) carries the value across the gap to the next die. Walking the tower face by face with these two rules is direct and needs no algebra.
1STEP 1

Find the bottom of the top die

The top face of the top die shows 2. Its bottom face is the opposite face, so it must make 7 with it.

7 - 2 = 5
2STEP 2

Cross to the middle die

The bottom of the top die (5) touches the top of the middle die, and a touching pair sums to 8. So the middle die's top face is 8 - 5.

8 - 5 = 3
3STEP 3

Find the bottom of the middle die

The middle die's top is 3, so its opposite bottom face makes 7 with it.

7 - 3 = 4
4STEP 4

Cross to the bottom die

The bottom of the middle die (4) touches the top of the bottom die, and a touching pair sums to 8. So the bottom die's top face is 8 - 4.

8 - 4 = 4
5STEP 5

Find the ground face

The bottom die's top is 4, so the face resting on the ground is the opposite face, making 7 with it.

7 - 4 = 3
Answer
3
Every face value lands between 1 and 6 (real die faces): top die 2/5, middle die 3/4, bottom die 4/3. Both touching pairs check out (5+3 = 8 and 4+4 = 8) and all three opposite pairs make 7 (2+5, 3+4, 4+3), so the answer 3 is consistent with every rule.
Takeaway

Climb down the dice tower one face at a time: 'opposite makes 7' flips a face, 'touching makes 8' hops to the next die.

  • Find the bottom of the top die
  • Cross to the middle die
  • Find the bottom of the middle die
  • Cross to the bottom die
  • Find the ground face
