Whole as 1: find remaining fraction

We start with 80 tangerines. First we put 1/4 of them in box A. Then, from the tangerines that are still left, we put 2/3 of THOSE in box B. We want to know how many tangerines remain after both boxes are filled.

Strategy Draw a Diagram — The key trap is the phrase '2/3 of the rest' — the 2/3 is measured against the leftover pile, not the whole 80. A bar (tape) diagram makes the whole equal to 1, shows box A taking 1/4, and shows box B taking 2/3 of the remaining 3/4 bar, so we can SEE what fraction of the whole is left. Then we break the work into clear subproblems (find A's amount, find the remainder, find B's amount, find what is left).

Draw the 80 tangerines as one bar and cut it in four; box A takes one part, 20.

Find the rest (the remaining bar)

After box A, the leftover part of the bar is the other 3 of the 4 parts, which is 3/4 of the whole. In tangerines that is 80 minus 20.

80 - 20 = 60

Box B takes two thirds of the remaining 60, not of the original 80, so it takes 40.

The pieces add up: box A 20 + box B 40 + left over 20 = 80, the original total, so nothing is lost or double-counted. The answer is a whole number and smaller than the starting 80, which makes sense.
