Split the total gap into equal steps

Four numbers sit on a number line in order, evenly spaced. We know the two ends, -1/7 and 1 4/7, and need the sum of the two middle numbers x and y.

How to solve
Strategy Draw a Diagram — Picture the four points on a number line. The distance from the first to the last is covered by three equal steps, so find the total distance, cut it into three, and step along from -1/7.
1STEP 1

Measure the whole stretch

Write 1 4/7 as 11/7 and subtract the left end. Subtracting a negative adds its size.

11/7 - (-1/7) = 11/7 + 1/7 = 12/7
2STEP 2

Find one step

Four points have three equal gaps between them.

12/7 ÷ 3 = 4/7
3STEP 3

Step along to x and y

Start at -1/7 and add one gap at a time.

x = -1/7 + 4/7 = 3/7, y = 3/7 + 4/7 = 1
4STEP 4

Add the middle numbers

Now add x and y.

3/7 + 1 = 10/7
Answer
10/7
The middle pair is placed symmetrically, so x+y must equal the sum of the two ends: -1/7 + 11/7 = 10/7. It matches.
Takeaway

For evenly spaced numbers, the two middle ones add up to the same as the two ends.

  • Measure the whole stretch
  • Find one step
  • Step along to x and y
  • Add the middle numbers
