How to solve
Strategy Eliminate Possibilities — Counting cubes settles the sizes first: the shape holds eight, so it is two four-cube pieces. Then place the most rigid piece -- the flat square, which needs a 2 × 2 patch of floor -- and see whether what is left is one of the others.

Count the cubes in the finished shape

Five cells on the floor and three of them carrying a second cube.

5 + 3 = 8
2STEP 2

Place the piece with the least freedom

The flat square needs four cells forming a 2 × 2 patch, and the floor has exactly one such patch -- the two front cells with the two back cells beside them.

3STEP 3

See what is left

What remains is the third cell of the back row on the floor, plus the whole second layer -- a row of three with one cube below one end.

4STEP 4

Check the fit

The two pieces cover all eight cubes with nothing left over and nothing counted twice.
