Cutting a piece away removes that much volume

A rectangular prism is cut straight down along a diagonal of its top face. We need the volume of one of the two pieces.

How to solve
Strategy Visualize Spatial Relationships — The two pieces are triangular prisms, and a diagonal splits a rectangle into two congruent triangles. So the pieces are congruent, and there is no need to work either one out on its own -- halve the whole.

See that the two pieces match

A diagonal cuts the top rectangle into two congruent triangles, and the cut goes straight down, so each piece is a triangular prism on one of those triangles -- and the two prisms are congruent.

2STEP 2

Find the whole prism's volume

Multiply the three edges.

16 × 10 × 7 = 1120

Halve it

The two congruent pieces share the volume equally.

1120 ÷ 2 = 560

560 cm³
Work one piece out directly: its triangular face is 16 × 10 ÷ 2 = 80 cm², and 80 × 7 = 560 cm³.
